"An EWG VERIFIED: For Your Health™ mark on a product means that the product goes above and beyond its green rating in EWG's Skin Deep® because the company has disclosed more about its formulations and manufacturing processes."

Why is this important?

According to EWG's website, the average woman uses 12 personal products daily and is exposed to hundreds of chemicals - none of which are required to be tested for safety.

EWG scientists have developed specific criteria and algorithms to generate a disclosure score for personal care products to make sure each product is free from the ingredients of concern. The link to EWG's "Restricted List" is published on their website, which is quite lengthy and detailed, and can be viewed here.

Based on EWG's specific criteria, each product is then rated and the results are then published in their Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database. To date, EWG has published over 70,000 personal care products which are rated and are listed in this database. EWG's ultimate goal is to have "every product on store shelves meet our rigorous criteria and proudly bear our mark."

EWG gathers available data from a variety of sources, including the company websites and also from reviewing the company's own product labeling. Unfortunately, due to lack of transparency by some companies, EWG will often make determinations without any direct input from a company. EWG scientists will conduct in-depth research on a particular product to determine the product's potential for toxins. Once EWG scientists determine there is enough data on a particular product they will publish their findings in a form of a hazard rating.

The great news is that more and more companies are voluntarily submitting their products to EWG for testing. in addition to submitting their products to rigorous testing, companies must also agree to:

Develop, document and follow current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

Pass basic microbial challenge tests and repeat these tests as necessary.

Disclose all fragrance allergens that are required on personal care product labels in the EU.

Not contain any ingredients on the EWG "Restricted" list above the allowed concentrations.

Follow the EU's labeling guidelines for nano-materials used in cosmetics.

Fully disclose all ingredients on the label, including ingredients used in fragrance and flavor mixtures and chemicals used to coat mineral ingredients.

Indicate expiration date or the period of time after opening.

Commit to submitting all reports of product problems or serious adverse events to FDA (for all products).

Since it's inception, 1,336 products have been approved for the EWG VERIFIED™ mark.
