Cat Chen is the Founder and CEO of Skylar Perfume. Cat became acquainted with a cleaner line of personal care products while working for The Honest Company. During her time there, Cat became involved in a great deal of research into what ingredients were commonly found in baby products, household products, and personal care products. Their research would always take them to the same conclusion; the ingredients contained in a fragranced product are a mystery.

It wasn’t until her daughter Anne, who was 4 months old at the time, had a reaction to the fragrance she was wearing, did Cat’s search begin for a fragrance she could wear that was also hypoallergenic – she found none.

Since the FDA does not have the authority to require that fragrance companies disclose their ingredients, these companies are allowed to keep the ingredients a mystery through the company’s trade secrets. In the meantime, we are all exposed to the toxic chemicals found in those products – ingredients that have direct links to reproduction problems, cancer, allergic reactions, and other health risks.

According to the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) there are over 3,059 materials currently being used in fragrance, some which have been linked to allergies. They even conducted a study in 2016 to research the health effects from fragrance. This study found that 99.1% of participants when exposed at least once a week from their own use, from other’s individuals use reported negative health issues. Some of those health complaints included migraines and asthma.
