Summer Fun - Kids - Sunscreen or UV Skinz?

The first official day of summer starts June 21st. Did you know that it only takes a few bad sunburns in childhood to significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer in adulthood. The best form of sun protection for all of us is still a hat and shirt but for most of us we would rather play out in the sun in a bathing suit and maybe use a sunscreen. So, it is important to make sure the sunscreen you are using is safe and effective.

Recommended Sunscreens by EWG

It it worth repeating that the FDA does not have the authority to regulate what ingredients are used in baby or children's personal care products, including sunscreens for children. However, there a better way to help you make an informed decision as what is the best sunscreen to purchase for your child this summer. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has published their list of the best scoring sunscreens for children. But first, here is a list of some of the worst sunscreens for children, according to EWG:

Banana Boat Kids Continuous Spray Sunscreen Coppertone Foaming Lotion Sunscreen Kids Wacky Foam CVS Health Children's Sunstick Sunscreen Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen Neutrogena Wet Skin Kids Sunscreen Spray

Up & Up Kids Sunscreen Sticks

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) looked at the top rated sunscreen products currently sold in the market for use on children. They purchased these products and then tested each of them for toxic ingredients, reviewed their packaging and reviewed each of these sunscreens for usability. EWG scored each sunscreen product between 1 and 10, with 1 being the best score and 10 being the worst score. Here are a few sunscreens recommended for children from their list:

EWG Score 1. This is non-nano with Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide, ingredients known to be reef safe. This product is also scent free and cruelty free.

EWG Score 1. This is also non-nano. Gluten, soy and dairy free. Reef safe & 80 minutes water resistant.

EWG Score 1. This is made with 100% zinc oxide and with the addition of sea kelp and lotus extract.
